LifestyleThe quiet joy of taking yourself out
By Andrea Hills
Good light, a favourite chair and a corner that doesn't have to impress anyone.

A room can look finished and still feel difficult to live in. The details that make home comfortable are often less visible: somewhere to set down a cup, a lamp beside the chair, a blanket within reach.
Begin with a moment rather than an aesthetic. Where do you sit when you get home? What do you always find yourself moving? A small change in the right place can do more than a room full of new objects.
Clear a surface, move a chair towards the light, and gather a few things you use. Allow the room to keep the evidence of your life: a book in progress, a postcard, the bowl you bought on a trip.
A home is allowed to evolve slowly. It does not need to be ready for a photograph to be ready for you.
