Make room for a slower kind of story

A reading ritual for anyone whose to-read pile has started to feel like a to-do list.

The story

A growing pile of books can represent possibility, but it can also begin to resemble homework. Reading for pleasure works best when the pleasure has a say in the plan.

Choose one book because a sentence, a subject or a friend's description caught your attention. You do not owe the rest of the pile an explanation. Give yourself a little time to settle into its particular pace.

A smaller reading ritual

Keep the book where you naturally pause: by the sofa, in your bag or beside the kettle. A handful of pages is a perfectly good reading session. If a story is not for you right now, set it aside without making it a verdict on your attention span.

A book can be a conversation that unfolds slowly. There is no need to rush towards having an opinion about it.
