ShoppingFind the Autumn Jacket That Fits Your Routine

Forget the number on the label for a moment. Start with how a pair of jeans feels in motion.

A good fitting-room session has less to do with finding the smallest size and more to do with finding a pair you can live in. Bring the shoes you are likely to wear, or choose a pair with a similar sole height.
Start by sitting down. Check the waist, the rise and whether a seam presses where you would rather it didn’t. Walk a few steps and reach for something. The mirror can tell you about the silhouette; moving tells you about the day.
Next, look at the hem with your shoes on. A length that works with a trainer may collect on the floor with a flat. If you are considering an alteration, find out what it involves before buying.
Finally, name three things already in your wardrobe that you would wear with the jeans. A strong answer is more useful than an imagined future self with an entirely different closet.
